Have you ever had someone call you up and drop a fantastic job offer in your lap? When you didn’t expect it at all? Yeah, me neither. Well, not until this month anyhow.
You all know that I do some freelance writing and I’ve been working at building this up since we sold the restaurant a year ago, but with a greater focus in the last six months or so. One of the publications that I’ve done some work for is International Living Magazine which is a great fit for me as a writer since I live abroad. Fishing in Panama, Moving to Ecuador with children, and interviews with other ex-pats have been just a few of the article subjects I’ve been able to provide for them.
Well a couple of weeks ago, the editor of IL and I had a Skype conversation in which I was offered a contract position with them as their Ecuador Correspondent! I’ll still be a freelancer, but for this role I’ll be given a monthly retainer, payment for articles I write, and the opportunity to speak at several of their conferences which take place in different international locations. There are a few other responsibilities involved but for the most part I get to write about what I love and get paid regularly for doing it.
It’s tough to imagine something I would enjoy doing more, except possibly being a professional chocolate taste tester. Hmmm, I wonder if I should have asked for a chocolate clause in the contract… In all seriousness, this is a great opportunity and I’m excited to see where it takes me!
So as of yesterday the contract has been signed and I am officially on board. If you’d like to see an example of my writing for IL or just see what they’re all about, head over to the International Living website and take a look!
