Photo Essay on the Black Hills of South Dakota

I mentioned in my last post that I spent a little time in the U.S. last month visiting family. After road tripping it with my brother Barry to Denver where we picked up his girlfriend Rachel, we continued on to my uncle’s house in South Dakota. I hadn’t seen Lynn in 25 years, so it was a great chance to catch up. Luckily, Lynn lives near South Dakota’s best region (in my opinion), the Black Hills.

Here’s a photo tour to give you an idea of how beautiful this area can be.

The area is full of rock formations and granite mountains giving it a very rugged aura.

Those granite peaks are perfect for carving enormous monuments like Mount Rushmore…

….and the still incomplete Crazy Horse.

There are gorgeous lakes like Lake Sylvan.

And sprawling grasslands where wildlife thrive.

At the end of the day it’s tough to beat a scene like this.

  1. Hi Wendy,

I’m not sure if you remember but we are the family from NH that’s doing a Sourh America trip. You had offered me some encouraging advice awhile back. We are here for 6 months, currently in Ecuador. We are having a great time with our girls! Anyway, if any interest we are keeping a blog at if you’d like to see what we are up to. Are you still in Ecuador?
Also, I love the black hills of South Dakota! So beautiful!
    Take care,

  2. Hi Kim,

I do remember you and am glad to hear you’re down here in S.A.! I’ll definitely be taking a look at your blog soon. 🙂

I am still in Ecuador, but recently spent a couple of weeks back in the U.S. It was the first time I had been back in 3 years so it was a nice time. I look forward to hearing about your adventures!
